About

Suzuran* Photography is the soul baby of Suzanne Cofer, who as a (naughty) child took her favorite photographs out of her mother’s meticulously arranged albums. She kept them in a box, poring over them at night before bed or on rainy Sunday afternoons. Each image brought to mind a story, either recalled from a shadowy memory, or a brand new narrative to explain people and places and juxtapositions of which she had not previously been aware. Sometimes she wrote these stories down, but most of the time they just took up residence in her neurotransmitters, boosting her serotonin levels and making her very happy.

These days Suzanne decides what camera to pack for the day before she chooses and outfit. She loves fashion and film, color and contrast, but most of all she loves a good narrative and a solid do-it-yourself ethic! Suzanne feels that the best photographs are those that tell a story. Whether that story is the unfolding of a wedding day, the wonder of turning one year old, the beauty in the contours of a face, or the identity of a band, Suzuran Photography will be ready with quill. . . er, camera. . . in hand, ready to sing your story from the rooftops!

Suzanne prefers the spontaneity of ambient light photography but certainly isn’t opposed to glossy studio images achieved with lots of luscious light.

Feel free to look around. Peruse if you will. Tell stories; Suzanne insists.

* “Suzuran” is Japanese for “lily of the valley”, which is both my namesake and my birth month flower. I spent two years of my life in Japan and feel I owe a great deal of my photographic (and otherwise) inspiration to that country. The small white bells of the lily of the valley are so well formed, so delicate. I strive for my photographs to embody that aesthetic.
